Tribute to Dr. David Anderson

Dr. David Anderson was more than a historian — he was a living bridge between the past and the present, a voice that carried the stories of our ancestors into the hearts of new generations. As a distinguished storyteller, historian, and educator, he dedicated his life to ensuring that the struggles, triumphs, and legacies of African American history were never forgotten.

His years with the Urban League reflected a deep commitment to equity, opportunity, and empowerment. From 1967 to 1970, Dr. Anderson served as Deputy Executive Director of the Urban League of Rochester, where he oversaw a staff of 50 and helped develop programs focused on job training & placement, youth development, and housing. He did not simply work for the community; he worked alongside it, mentoring young leaders and encouraging individuals to recognize their own potential. Through Project Uplift, he trained young participants to collect data on homes contaminated by lead paint, helping lay the foundation for Rochester’s first Lead Paint Poison Abatement Program. His leadership was guided by compassion, his advocacy by justice, and his teaching by truth.

Whether speaking in classrooms, guiding historical tours, or engaging in civic dialogue, Dr. Anderson’s presence was magnetic. He had a gift for making history feel alive, relevant, and personal, reminding us that we are all part of an ongoing story.

Today, we honor Dr. Anderson not only for his scholarship and service but for the way he made people feel seen, valued, and capable of greatness. His legacy will continue to shape Rochester and beyond, reminding us that the work of building a just and vibrant community is both our inheritance and our responsibility.

May we carry forward his passion, his wisdom, and his unwavering belief in the power of knowledge to transform lives.

His legacy echoes in the hearts of countless lives seen and unseen who chose a life rooted in community impact because of his impact on them.

Eternally Grateful, Rest in Power...
